White Co. Executive Said Roundabouts Are More Beneficial Than You Might Think

The potential for a T-DOT project to create a roundabout in Putnam County may be concerning to some.

White County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said when a similar situation occurred in White County a few years ago, he shared those concerns. He said now, he and others feel differently.

“I’ll tell you what kind of sold me on it is when I saw the crash statistics,” Robinson said. “It doesn’t necessarily lower the number the accidents but the severity of the accidents.”

Robinson said at a crossroads intersection, most wrecks and impacts will be T-bone accidents. He said usually there are more bodily injuries in those situations. An accident in a roundabout will typically just be a side swipe.

Robinson said the roundabout also helps with traffic flow issues.

“It’s kind of grown on people,” Robinson said. “There are still people who don’t like it. But it’s amazing that people I’m running into now who say that’s working out a lot better than what I thought. People just have to get to learn to how to use it. People have to adjust to it.”
