White Co Deputy Cleared In Shooting

District Attorney Bryant Dunaway cleared a White County Sheriff’s Deputy for the January 8 killing of a White County man.

Dunaway said there is no evidence Deputy Cliff Altobelli used excessive force or committed a criminal offense in the shooting of 47-year-old Charlie Williams. Williams died as deputies tried to serve an arrest warrant at his Woodland Trail home in Sparta.

Williams left through the rear of the home. Deputies followed him to a back deck. According to the TBI investigation, Dunaway said Williams turned toward the deputy, removed something from his pants, and began flailing his arm. The deputy tried to push Williams away with his left arm. Then fired a shot into the abdomen.

Dunaway said the deputy thought the black object was a firearm or a knife. It was a wallet.
