White County leaning towards selling its Class 1 landfill as the process continues to address issues at the site.
County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said a Class 1 landfill has many restrictions and regulations due to the type of debris at the site. He said the pro to selling the landfill would be removing the county from long-term costs and other issues
“In the case that something were to leak or become an environmental issue any time in the future, that becomes the responsibility of the county,” Robinson said. “By selling it, we would be freeing the county of that long-term liability. That to me is why it’s leaning like a better option.”
Robinson said no official decisions have been made about taking the next steps. He said should the county commissioners decide to go the route of selling, the county will put out a request for proposals from potential buyers.
Robinson said there is no set timeline for this process. He said in the meantime, he is working to make sure the landfill operations are fixed and maintained properly.
“Right now I am presently trying to get someone to run the cell right now,” Robinson said. “And when I get that then we can kind of take a breath and step back for a minute. And that doesn’t put us in such a push to lease it or sell it.”
