The White County Solid Waste Committee considering a proposal from Waste Management to operate the county’s landfill under a lease agreement.
Commissioner Derrick Hutchings said the company presented its proposal to the committee Monday night. Hutchings said the committee meeting was recessed before a recommendation was made.
“We’re exploring all possibilities right now,” Hutchings said. “That is in no way a definite as to what we are going to do. The options on the table are close the landfill and have a transfer station, continue to operate the landfill ourselves or lease it.”
Hutchings said the committee will meet again Monday night to continue discussions with Waste Management. Hutchings said the company wants to determine how many tons of trash will be needed to make a lease feasible.
“There’s a lot of moving parts with a landfill,” Hutchings said. “We’re still trying to digest and learn all of that. there is a lot that goes into a landfill that a lot of people don’t necessarily recognize. We’re trying to educate ourselves the right way to make the best decision for the county and our community.”
Hutchings said the company should have a report to share in the coming weeks. Hutchings said Waste Management was the lead proposal out of three that the county received.
