White Co. Commission To Discuss Sheriff Legal Bill

The White County Commission’s regular meeting Monday will include an executive session.

County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said the county attorney needs to meet privately with the commission to discuss paying Sheriff Oddie Shoupe’s legal fees.

“They’ll be an attorney/client meeting for the county commission for our attorney to advise them what their options are. Basically, at this point there’s just two choices, we either contest the amount or we pay it, contesting the amount could lead to increased legal fees on top of this,” Robinson said.

Robinson said the county knew they’d have to foot the bill for legal services when Shoupe filed the suit. Since Shoupe’s a county official, the county picks up the tab under state law, Robinson said.

The bill for some $124,000 was delivered last week. The law office offered the county a $5,000 discount if they didn’t contest the amount of the bill.
