White Co. Circuit Clerk Running Out Of Space

White County will search for records storage options, as the Circuit Court Clerk’s office runs out of space.

Steering Committee B Member Roger Mason said the clerk’s office almost completely full of various court documents that they store there. Mason said he visited the office and it truly needs the space, as they are legally required to hold onto lots of paperwork for long periods of time.

“That’s going to be something that we’re going to have to address at some point, and it’s not as simple as putting a storage shed somewhere,” Mason said. “It’s got to be climate controlled and, and fire suppression, sprinkler-sprinkled or whatever, so we need to keep that on our radar.”

Committee members discussed using the old health department building after construction is completed on the new facility. But that’s at least 18 months away. Mason said the ideal solution would be to add extra space onto the Justice Center.

“They have to go pull stuff and, you know, sometimes it’s stuff from ten, twenty years ago or whatever and they’ve got to go pull it, and, you know, if you just start stacking it in a building somewhere that makes that very difficult,” Mason said.

County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said that plan is only conceptual at this point, but the added space is something the Justice Center already needs.

“Some kind of building needs to be added on there,” Robinson said. “The Justice Center needs to be added onto anyway, so we could incorporate that into one project maybe.”

Robinson said the circuit court clerk has to store original court documents for ninety-nine years.

“You can imagine how many court cases come through in a month and they’re just running out of places to put it,” Robinson said.
