West End Park Getting New Playground Equipment

Cookeville’s West End Park will be getting multiple upgrades after neighborhood residents let the city know what they want to see improved.

Leisure Services Director Rick Woods said they addressed safety concerns at the multi-purpose field by cleaning up brush and trees surrounding the area. Woods said the city will re-purpose the volleyball court with new swings, playground equipment and an artificial turf surface.

“That will be coming up later this Winter, early-Spring,” Woods said. “Probably, I’m anticipating six to eight weeks to complete all of that work.”

Woods said that based on the community’s input, the volleyball court was going unused. So, Woods said they found a better way to use the space.

“We will be putting in surfacing, removing all of the sand and putting in a playground surface,” Woods said. “Not a poured-in-place surface, but a playground surface that is like an artificial turf. It’s much softer and appropriate for playgrounds, designed for playgrounds. So that you have the fall protection.”

Woods said there are still more plans for West End Park improvements.

“We still look to improve the parking situation there,” Woods said. “And implement some other thoughts and ideas from the community, down the road.”

Woods said it was important to this project to get input from the community on what they desired for the park. Woods said setting up new basketball goals and resurfacing the court in 2020 was the first step for enhancing West End Park.
