Obituaries For Tuesday, July 2

A Memorial Service for Selena Nicole Hutton, 31 of Sparta, will be held at 6pm on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at Oak Lawn Funeral Home with Johnny Haston officiating. The family will welcome friends from 4pm until time of the service at the funeral home. She passed away on Friday, June 28, 2019. She was born Tuesday, March 22, 1988 in Holland, Michigan. She was the daughter of Dennis Hutton and Jeanna Tayes Simpkins. Selena loved to draw, poetry, make-up, and her job as a cosmetologist.

Funeral service for John Collins Owens, age 79, of Cookeville, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday July 3 at Church on the Hill. Rev. Bill Stone will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Cookeville City Cemetery. Mr. Owens passed away Saturday June 29, 2019 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was born September 30, 1939 in Overton County to the late Alvin Delmer and Bernice Holbert Owens. Mr. Owens was a member of the TN National Guard. He was a Tennessee Tech University graduate. His professional career included service with the Federal Highway Administration from which he retired. He later became an enrolled agent with the IRS. He also formerly worked for the Food and Drug Administration and US Department of Agriculture. Mr. Owens was a devout Christian and member of Church on the Hill. He is survived by his daughter, Emily (Brad) Qualls of Nolensville; three sisters, Ann Barkalow of Mt. Juliet; Jerri Barnhill of Birmingham, AL, and Ella (Gary) Givens of Cartersville, GA; two grandchildren, Kathryn and Claire Qualls; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Melinda Burkitt Owens; and infant sister, Peggy Jane Owens. His family will receive friends Tuesday from 4 – 8 p.m at Dyer Funeral Home and again Wednesday from 10 a.m until service time at the church. Funeral services for Edmonda Young Stephens, age 98 of Sparta, will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, July 3, 2019 in the Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home with burial in the Indian Mound Cemetery. Edmonda passed away on Sunday afternoon, June 30, 2019 at St. Thomas Highlands Hospital. The family will receive friends from 4pm until 8pm on Tuesday Evening.

Funeral services for Ann (Anna Amelia Augusta) Owen Nelms, age 91 of Cookeville and formerly of Nashville, will be held Wednesday, July 3 at 12:00 p.m. at Spring Hill Funeral Home in Nashville. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Nelms died Friday, June 28, 2019 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. She was born Saturday, December 31, 1927 on Frenchman Hill, Mount Pleasant, to the late William Jay and Anna Amelia Augusta Wagner Owen. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Ruby Owens, Florence (Artis) Thompson, Sadie Carr, Gladys Josephine (Amos) Davidson, and Billiej (Wayne) Boshers. She is survived by her son, Dr. Jonathan Nelms and wife Glenda of Cookeville; daughters, Cynthia Lynn Nelms of Mobile, AL and Susan Murray Plank of Bois D’Arc, MO; grandsons, Nathanael Nelms and John Philip Nelms; nieces and nephew, Nancy Davidson, Art (Ellen) Thompson, Marsha (James) Woody, and Patti (Patrick) Lyons; and family friend Julie Hornady. Mrs. Nelms’s family will receive friends Tuesday, July 2 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home and again on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at Spring Hill Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Church, 354 S. Jefferson Ave., Cookeville, TN 38501.

Funeral services for Faye Stout, age 83, of Cookeville will be held Wednesday, July 3rd, 2019 at 3:00 pm in the chapel of Presley Funeral Home with Eric Collins and Mike Webb officiating. Interment will follow in Crest Lawn Memorial. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 3, 2019, 10:30 AM – 3:00 PM at Presley Funeral Home. Faye passed away Monday, July 1, 2019 at Signature Healthcare of Putnam County in Cookeville, Tennessee. She was born Thursday, June 25, 1936 in Cookeville, Tennessee to the late Bee Rippetoe and Clema Jaquess Rippetoe. Faye was a long time member of Double Springs Church of Christ. She was a member of Double Springs Quilting Ladies group.

Funeral services for Ida Belle Duke Johnson, age 88, of Cookeville, will be at 11 a.m. Friday July 5 at Dyer Funeral Home. Bishop Ron Phillips and Pastor Tim Milligan will officiate. Interment will follow at the Birdwell Cemetery in Jackson County. Mrs. Johnson passed away Saturday June 29, 2019 at her home. She was born January 17, 1931 in Jackson County to the late Bedford and Louise Holmes Duke. Mrs. Johnson was a member of First United Pentecostal Church. She was formerly employed at S & W Cafe in Cookeville. She and her late husband, Glen, went from place to place singing gospel music for many years. They were also charter members of Emanuel Church of Christ. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Johnson; three sisters, Altie Mai Davis, Anna Ruth McDonald, and Betty Jean Collier; and five brothers, Carlos, Clifton, Freeman, Raligh, and Rufus Duke. Her family will receive friends Thursday from 3 – 5 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. until service time.

Funeral services for Mr. David Lee Shirley, age 74 of Livingston, will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at 2 PM from the Chapel of the Hall Funeral Home of Livingston with burial to follow in the Cash Cemetery in Livington. Mr. Shirley passed away from this life on Monday evening, July 1, 2019 at his residence. Mr. David Lee Shirley was born in Noblesville, Hamilton Co., Indiana on Monday, July 3, 1944 to the late Ralph Shirley and Dorothy Louise (Hill) Hamilton. David loved his children , family and friends very much. Survivors: 5 Sons: David, John, Bobby, Matthew, Jessie; 8 Daughters: Laura, Dorothy, Bessie, Candy, Becky, Montana, Carol, Latonya; 2 Sisters: Marilynn, Wanda; 3 Brothers: Norman, Richard, Don; 44 Grandchildren; 37 Great Grandchildren; Preceded: In addition to his parents; 1 Grandson: Benjermin Shirley; 1 Great Grandson: Robert Latour; 1 Brother: Ramon. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, July 6, 2019 starting at 11 AM with services at 2 PM.
