Obituaries For Thursday, April 29

Mr. Mike Austin, age 61 of Sparta, passed away Thursday morning, April 29 at his residence. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Greta Sue Flatt, 77 of Cookeville, passed away on Wednesday, April 28, at NHC Health Care in Cookeville. She was born July 8, 1944, in Orlinda, TN, to the late Burnis Jones and Bessie Jones. On November 3, 1984, she was married to Kenneth R. Flatt, who survives. She worked as a receptionist for Dr. James Grisolano, and was a member of the Church of Christ. She is now in heaven with her family and loved ones. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Shriners Children’s Hospital by contacting the funeral home. The family will hold a private funeral service will be held at Anderson Upper Cumberland Funeral Home, with burial to follow in the Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Cookeville.

Judy Rena Livesay age, 73 of Cookeville, passed away Wednesday, April 28 surrounded by family. Judy was a CNA for many years at Life Care in Sparta, she also attended the life church. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Funeral services for Jerry Wayne Holt, age 72 of Cookeville, will be held on Friday, April 30 at 11 A.M. at Anderson Upper Cumberland Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Flatt – Woolbright Cemetery in Jackson County. Mr. Holt passed away on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at his residence. He was born November 20, 1948, in Hazel Green, AL, to the late Jeremiah Brooks Holt and Mary Lee McCool Holt. On November 9, 1984, he was married to Pam Holt, who survives. He was retired from the Division of Property Assessment as Regional Supervisor, and served in the U.S. Army. Survivors include his wife, Pam Holt of Cookeville; son, Jeremy (Logan Lawalin) Holt of Savannah, GA; and daughters, Amanda (Chris) Harris of Baxter, and Lori (Sam) Somerville-Hamlin of West Virginia. Family would like to offer a special thanks to Visiting Angels and Avalon Hospice for their care during Jerry’s illness. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 4 P.M. – 8 P.M., and Friday from 9 A.M. until time of services.

Funeral services for Coach Dee Harris, age 92 of Sparta, will be conducted 12:00pm Friday, April 30 at West Sparta Church of Christ. Burial with full military honors by the Veterans’ Honor Guard will follow in Highland Cemetery. Coach Harris passed away Tuesday evening at the Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Dee attended White County High School, graduating in 1948. During his time there, he was involved in many activities, excelling in football and basketball, earning a football scholarship to Middle Tennessee State University. At MTSU, Dee was introduced to his mentor, Coach Charles Murphy, who helped shape Dee’s professional career. In 1951, Dee answered his country’s call, and proudly served in the United States Army in the Panama Canal until 1953. Dee then returned to Tennessee and earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Education from MTSU in 1954. Dee began an illustrious coaching career at Pulaski, and later at Watertown. When offered the chance to return home and be the head coach of his beloved Warriors, Dee didn’t think twice and accepted the role in 1958. The following year, Dee married his love, Rosemary Meadows, on July 24th. Throughout their 45 year marriage, they not only lovingly raised two sons, Mike and Steve Harris, but many other athletes, friends, nieces and nephews. He is survived by his sons, Mike (Connie) Harris of Sparta and Steve (Jennifer) Harris of Murfreesboro. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Highland Cemetery, where Dee served on the board of directors for over 20 years, in care of Hunter Funeral Home, PO BOX 90, Sparta, TN 38583. The family will receive friends Friday from 10:00am until service time at West Sparta Church.

Funeral services for David Ray Wilson age 80 of the Doyle Community will be Friday April 30 at 1:00 PM, with burial in the Spring Hill cemetery. Bishop Donald Goodrum and Bishop Howard Thomason will officiate. He passed away April 26, 2021 at CRMC after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born January 28, 1941 in Spencer TN to his parents Milburn and Linnie Mae. He had 5 sisters Nyda Faye, Ida Mae, Emma Jane, Paulette, and Willette. He was a 1959 graduate of Van Buren County High School. He married the love of his life, Dorothy Roberts Wilson on March 16, 1962. They were married 57 years before her death. He was a career employee of Thomas Industries where he was known as Speedy. David and Dorothy also served as House parents at the Church of God Home for Children for 8 years in Seiverville TN. He was a member of the East Sparta Church of God where he served as church clerk and council member for many years. He also served as Pastor of the Gum Springs Mtn. Church of God and had a radio ministry for several years. The family will receive friends for the viewing from 4-7 PM Thursday April 29 at the East Sparta Church of God.

Funeral services for Tommy Moss, age 81 of Nashville, formerly of Baxter, will be held Friday April 30, 2021 beginning at 2:00 pm from the chapel of Crest Lawn Funeral Home with Bro. Johnny Fox officiating. Interment will follow in Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. He passed from this life Monday, April 26, 2021. Born Wednesday, November 29, 1939 in Baxter, he was the son of the late Jim and Rhoda (Leftwich) Moss. Tommy was a loving father, grand father and friend to all. He loved to tell a good joke yet also would let you know when you were wrong in a nice way. He was a giving person donating to St. Judes Children’s Hospital every month. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, from 12:00 noon until the time of service at 2:00 pm.

A Celebration Of Life Gathering For Anna Sue Davis, Age 84 Of Monterey, Will Be Conducted On Friday, April 30 From 4:00 PM Until 6:00 PM From The Chapel Of Goff Funeral Home. Mrs. Davis Passed Away On Friday, April 23 At The Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Davis Worked With Procter And Gamble And Was An Executive Secretary To The Vice President. She Attended University Of Cincinnati And Was A Member Of Mensa. She Is Survived By Her Husband Of 60 Years, Lonnie Davis Of Monterey; Daughter, Daphne Davis Of Cincinnati; and sons, Barry Alan Davis And April Davis Of Crossville, and Terry Davis Of Cincinnati.

A Memorial Service for Troy Eugene Gore, 59 of Sparta, will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday, April 30 at Oak Lawn Funeral Home with Cameron Howard officiating. Mr. Gore passed away on Friday, April 23 at his home. Troy was an avid motorsports enthusiast who enjoyed bringing life back to all things mechanical. He was a loving Daddy, Brother, and friend. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, riding motorcycles, playing bocce ball, and playing with his grandchildren. Troy brought a light to this Earth that will never go dim as he always had a kind word and a smile for everyone he met. He is survived by his children, Lindsey Gore, Cody Gore, and Lee (Kim) Braswell. The family will welcome friends from 4:00 PM until time of the service at the funeral home.

Funeral services for Terilyn Locke Allen, 35, of Gainesboro, will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2021, at 12 Noon at Anderson Upper Cumberland Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Pharris Cemetery in the McCoinsville community of Jackson County. She passed away on Sunday, April 25, 2021, at her residence. She was born June 11, 1985, in Cookeville, TN, to Janice Locke and the late Landon Locke. She was a caregiver to her mother. Survivors include 2 Sons: Lucas Allen and Leeland Allen, both of Cookeville; her Mother: Janice Locke of Gainesboro. The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 1, 2021, from 9 A.M. until time of services. Celebration of Life Services for Mr. Bernard “Bernie” George Barton, age 78 of Rickman will be conducted 12 noon, Saturday, May 1 from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home. Greg Maxwell will officiate. Military Honors will be provided at the services from the Overton County Veterans Honor Guard. Bernie passed from this life on Wednesday morning, April 28 from his residence in Rickman. Bernie served in the Air Force for 4 years. He also served with the Tennessee State Guard for 10 years. During a portion of his time with the Tennessee State Guard, he served as Chaplain – officiating over military funerals. He was a graduate of North East Christian Jr. College and David Lipscomb College. He pursued a Masters Degree at Johnson State College in Vermont. He preached for churches of Christ for over 50 years, lastly (until his brief illness) at the church of Christ in Pleasant Hill for 17 years. He was grateful to God for allowing him that opportunity of serving. He took great joy in volunteering for various causes especially with nursing homes and providing rides to treatments for persons with cancer. Bernie leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Elease Morrow Barton, of Rickman. Memorial Donations may be made to the Overton County Honor Guard or St. Jude’s Children Hospital by contacting Speck Funeral Home. The family will welcome friends from 10 a.m. until time of services at Speck Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Mr. James Allen Carter, age 72 of Sparta, will be conducted 1:00pm Saturday, May 1 from the Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Palmer Cemetery with military honors presented by the Veterans’ Honor Guard. Mr. Carter passed away Thursday, April 29 at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West in Nashville. He served his country as an EM3 in the United States Navy. Before retiring, James did it all – from being an antique dealer in California to working road construction in Tennessee. He was quite a talented musician, regularly performing at local nursing homes. James especially enjoyed playing guitar and singing with his granddaughter Mackenzie. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to all three of his grandchildren. James is lovingly survived by his daughters, Amanda (Paul) Stockton, and Jamie (John) Sullivan, all of Sparta. The family will receive friends from 11:00am on Saturday until the time of service at the funeral home.

Funeral services for Sylvia Dean Smith, age 92 of Cookeville, will be at 1 p.m Saturday May 1 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Pastor Jason Stanford will officiate. Interment will follow at Crest Lawn Cemetery. Mrs. Smith passed away Wednesday April 28 at her home. She was born January 30, 1929 in Putnam County, TN to the late Lee and Mary McCormick Sparks. Sylvia was a member of Trinity Algood Church. She formerly worked with various cleaning services. Sylvia loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She is survived by daughters, Betty (David) Morris, Dian (Larry) Jones; and son, Danny (Donna) Smith all of Cookeville. Her family will receive friends Friday from 5 – 8 p.m. and again Saturday from 11 a.m. until service time.
