Obituaries For Wednesday, September 13

A memorial gathering for Rebecca Laraine Shaw, 52 of Baxter, will be held from 6:00pm to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at Crest Lawn Funeral Home. She passed away on Thursday, September 7, 2023. Born Wednesday, October 21, 1970 in Oneonta, New York, she was the daughter of Floyd Shaw and Lila Frisbee Shaw. Becky loved being Gigi to her grandchildren, She was a colorful person and lived life on her terms and expressed it through her crafting. Becky is survived by: Daughter: Danica (Aaron Vanwinkle) Helton; Sons: Donovan (Karley) Helton, Devin (Makayla Dickerson) Helton; Brothers: Darrin (Betty Sue) Shaw, Raymond Michael Shaw; Grandchildren: Tristen C, Brantley, Addilynn, Waylen, and Tristan.

Funeral services for Mr. Floyd Otis “Babe” Moody, 91 of Cookeville, will be held Thursday, September 14th at 11 a.m. in the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Arlington of Tennessee Cemetery. Pastor Myron Greer will officiate. Mrs. Moody died Sunday September 10, 2023 at NHC Healthcare, Cookeville. His family will receive friends Wednesday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and again Thursday from 9 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Funeral services for Harold Jackson, age 83 of Cookeville, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday September 14 at Washington Avenue Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Sand Springs Memorial Gardens. Harold passed away Monday September 11 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. His family will receive friends Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.

Funeral Services for Bonnie Pierce, age 88, of the Love Joy Community of Monterey, will be conducted on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at 2:00 PM from The Chapel of Goff Funeral Home. Rev. David Harris, Rev. Josh Harris, and Rev. Tommy Harris will officiate with interment to follow in the Love Joy Cemetery. Mrs. Pierce was born on Saturday, December 22, 1934, in the Sisco Mountain Community of Overton County, to the late Loyd Foyster and Lyda Sisco Harris. Mrs. Pierce passed away on Monday, September 11, 2023, at her home. Mrs. Pierce was owner/operator of Tom’s Grocery in the Love Joy Community for over 52 years. She was a member of Love Joy Missionary Baptist Church. She is survived by, 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Earl Stephens of the Love Joy Community, Pam and Danny Rollins of the Love Joy Community; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Imalene Pierce of the Mineral Springs Community, Chris and Carla Pierce of Rickman; 7 grandchildren, Eric (Ashley) Stephens, Heather (Jon) Buckner, Brent (Marybeth) Rollins, Ethan (Brianna) Pierce, Creed Pierce, Calla Pierce, and Lisa (Anthony) Hite; 14 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; 2 sisters and a brother-in-law, Reba and Doyle Pierce of Monterey, Genevieve Stouder of Monterey; and 1 brother and sister-in-law, Hollis and Pat Harris of Monterey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tolbert “Tom” Pierce; sister, Emma Lou Tinch; brothers, M.L. Harris and George Harris. The family will receive friends at Goff Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

Funeral Services for Betty Jo Jolly Phifer, 91 of White County, will be conducted Friday, September 15, 2023 at 11:00 am from the Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home with burial in the Old Zion Cemetery. She was born November 5, 1931 to Earl and Kathleen Bilbrey Jolly in Overton County. They later moved to the Findlay community in White County where they called home. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, infant Rosa Nell Jolly, Earlene Jolly Graham, Patricia Ruth Jolly Howard, Paula Eugenia Jolly, and two brothers, Kenneth Ray Jolly, and William Dwight Jolly. Betty was a member of the Findlay United Methodist Church. She loved her church family and missed not being able to attend as her health declined. Betty was an avid sports fan and loved watching basketball games, especially her favorite TN Lady Vols. Her favorite past time was talking and spending time with her grandchildren, family, and many dear friends. Betty was devoted to helping others. She spent her career in the medical field as an LPN for over 50 years. Her career began at the Old White County Hospital where she helped deliver a baby on her first night. After the hospital, she worked for Dr. CB Roberts, Dr. Robert Baker Sr., and Dr. Robert Baker Jr. Her passion for helping others did not fade after retirement. She continued to serve and love others throughout her lifetime. Survivors include her son, Chris (Lauren) Phifer of Quebeck, TN, and daughter Kim (Tim) Sanders of Le Bouchage, France. Three grandchildren whom were her pride and joy, Evin Hibbs, Paxton Phifer, and Ansley Phifer. She is also survived by sisters Sue Sparkman, Linda Johnson, Sandra Lane, and Gail (John) Scoggins. Surviving brothers include Ralph (Sharon) Jolly, Jerry (Phillis) Jolley, and Billy (Terri) Jolly. One sister -in-law Peggy Jolly and one brother-in-law Merrill (Deloris) Howard, and many special nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 pm.

Funeral services for Mr. Kevin G. Dyer age 46 of Livingston, will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023 at 6 PM from the Chapel of the Hall Funeral Home of Livingston. Officiating the service will be Bro. Jerry Buck. The family has chosen cremation after the services. He passed from this life on Sunday, September 10, 2023 in Livingston. He was born in Livingston, on Sunday, August 14, 1977 to Dorothy (Dyer) Copeland. Kevin was loved by his family and friends and he will be greatly missed. Survivors: Wife: Amanda Dyer; Son: Kevin Dustin Dyer; Mother: Dorothy Copeland; 2 Brothers: Bill Dyer his wife Paige and Marty Dyer his wife Carrie. A host of family and friends also survive. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening September 15 starting at 4 PM until the beginning of service at 6 PM. The family requests in lieu of flowers please make donations towards services.

Funeral services for Peggy Mackie, age 85 of Cookeville, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday September 16 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Cookeville City Cemetery. Peggy passed away Monday September 11 at Signature Health Care in Algood. Her family will receive friends Saturday from 11 a.m. until time of services.
A memorial service for Helene Mae (Rowe) Furst, 97, a resident of Cookeville, will be held at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, September 16 at Heavenly Host Lutheran Church in Cookeville. Her ashes will be buried with her husband’s at the National Cemetery in Fayetteville, AR. She died peacefully September 5, 2023, after a long and healthy life. She was born May 23, 1926 on the family farm near Scandinavia, Wisconsin to Harry and Ella Rowe. After her graduation from Scandinavia High School, she attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, the first in her family to attend college. Growing up during the Great Depression, she developed life-long attributes of strength, fortitude, and common sense typical of the Greatest Generation. Following college graduation in 1948, she worked in public school and Luther College as a librarian. She earned her Master of Library Science degree at the University of Michigan and also met Edward Furst, whom she married in 1951. They celebrated 55 years of marriage before Ed passed away in 2007. Helene was an outgoing person who could strike up a conversation at any time or place and quickly find something in common with her new friend. A devoted wife and mother keenly interested in the activities of her husband and children, she enjoyed each of the college towns the family lived in during her husband’s life as a professor. The last stop was Fayetteville, Arkansas, where she put down deep roots and lived for 50 years. She was one of the founders of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with which she was deeply involved, and she established and maintained its library. She dedicated her time to volunteering in the community, for example, serving for decades at Washington Regional Hospital. She relished her Norwegian heritage and was sought out for her skill in making the traditional lefse flat bread. Without fail, every October she would don her shirt emblazoned with “Leif Landed First.” Her trips to Norway with family members were life highlights she cherished. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Julian and Kermit, and her husband Edward Furst. She is survived by her children Linda (Dennis Tiche), Don (Ellis) and Ken (Denene); her grandchildren Caren Michael (Josh), Brian Furst, Kevin Furst (Kristin), Laura Dwyer (Ryan), Rachel Tiche, Emily Tiche, Paris Furst, Juliet Furst, and Evangeline Furst; and her great-grandchildren Tommy Michael, Nate Michael, Sam Michael, Ethan Michael, Finnegan Furst, Vivien Furst, Matthew Dwyer, and Elise Dwyer. The family wishes to thank the devoted staff at Heritage Pointe Senior Living for their kind and professional care of Helene during her residency there, as well as Gentiva Hospice for their loving care of Helene in her final days. The family of Mr. Robert Donald Austin, age 88 of Sparta, will receive friends on Thursday, September 21, 2023 from 1-2:00pm at Hunter Funeral Home. A private burial will be held in Highland Cemetery. The Austin family has entrusted Hunter Funeral Home with Robert’s cremation. He passed away at 8:48am on Sunday, September 10, 2023 at Alive Hospice in Nashville. Robert was born November 4, 1934 in Sparta, to the late Charles Dudley and Jennie Rogers Austin. He was a lifelong farmer. He loved his cattle and loved his land that had been in his family since it was still property of North Carolina before Tennessee became a state. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by a sister Joyce Juanita Austin. Survivors include his sister Joan Austin Jones and husband Peter Edward Jones of Tyler, Texas; Two nieces: Jennifer Anne Blice and husband Joe of Plano, TX, Lezlie Elizabeth Jones and husband Ken Fraley of Amarillo, TX; Two great-nieces: Elizabeth Blice and Charlotte Blice.

The family of Allen Howard Allison, age 86 of Cookeville, will hold a public visitation in memory of him on Saturday, September 23, 2023, from 3:00-6:00pm at Whitson Funeral Home. No services will be held. Mr. Allison passed away on September 10, 2023, at the Bethesda Healthcare in Cookeville. Allen Howard Allison was born on March 6, 1937, in Cookeville, to the late John Howard and Carrie Ella (Allen) Allison. He worked in the newspaper industry with circulation. Several newspaper affiliates he worked for were the Gannett, Banner, & Tennessean. Howard was a lifetime resident of Putnam County, and of the Protestant faith. In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his brother: Albert Glen Allison and sister: Johnie Ruth Allison Maddux Knowles. He is survived by his wife: Sharon D. Martin; Stepdaughter: Whitney Martin Chandler of Oviedo, Fla; Two Grandchildren: Aydan D. Chandler and Ayvree D. Chandler.
