Obituaries For Monday, August 14

Celebration of Life Services for Barbara Poston, age 68, of Allons, will be conducted on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at 8:00 PM from The Chapel of Goff Funeral Home. Rev. Brett Gibbons will officiate. Mrs. Poston was born on July 11, 1955, in Monterey, to the late Bailey Malonzo and Roxie Murphy Hoover. Mrs. Poston passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at Ascension St. Thomas West in Nashville. Mrs. Poston was a homemaker. She taught her children early in life to not use the “B” word, meaning bored, as she would find them something to do. She was everything flowers with a green thumb to grow anything. She was a Christian and a daily bible reader. To know her was to love her. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Ronnie Poston of Allons; 1 daughter and son-in-law, Christy and Randal Slayton of Allons; 1 son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Lisa Poston of Cookeville; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; 2 sisters and a brother-in-law, Marie Looper, Brenda and James Matthews; 1 brother, Rev. Randall Hoover. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Marrison Hoover and Lonnie “Jr.” Hoover; and infant sisters, Ethel and Judy Ann Hoover. The family will receive friends at Goff Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, from 6:00 PM until time of services at 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be given to Goff Funeral Home to help with services.

Funeral Service for Doris J (Mace) Ward, 68 of Cookeville, will be held Thursday, August 17, 2023, at 1:00 pm from the chapel of Crest Lawn Funeral Home with Bro. Myron Greer officiating. Interment will follow in the Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. She passed away on Sunday, August 13, 2023. Doris was born Sunday, November 21, 1954, in Sparta, and she was the daughter of the late Johnny Mace and the late Beulah (Dillon) Mace. Doris was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Doris is survived by her husband of 51 years, Wesley Ward; 3 Daughters, Teresa Ward, Lisa Ward (Sean Eldridge), and Brenda Bumbalough and her husband, Ron; 10 Grandchildren, Brittany, Brandon, Kylar, Jacqueline, Austin, Haley, Danny Mistie, Carrie, and Jessica; 14 Great-Grandchildren; 3 Sisters, Millie, Lennie, and Wilma; 2 Brothers, Ricky, and Leeroy; A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends. In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her, Son John “Junebug” Ward, Great Granddaughter, Emma Brown, 2 Brothers Herbert, and Mickey Mace; 3 Sisters, Betty, Nancy, and Lucy. Visitation with the family will be held Wednesday, August 16, 2023, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm and again, Thursday, August 17, 2023, from 11:00 am until the time of service at 1:00 pm at Crest Lawn Funeral Home.

Memorial services for Mrs. Diana Joan (Nelson) Whitener, 83 of Cookeville, will be held at 1pm on Saturday, August 19th at the Dyer Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston and Horner. Chaplin Kelly Stockton will officiate. She passed away peacefully at Cookeville Regional Medical Center on Wednesday, August 9, 2023. She was born on June 11, 1940, in Turlock, California, to the late Sydney Bror Nelson and Agnes (Mostrom) Nelson. Mrs. Whitener was a 1958 graduate of Hilmar High School. She loved playing trumpet in the band and being a majorette. Following high school, Mrs. Whitener studied at Modesto Junior College before choosing a career as a bank teller, which she enjoyed doing for many years. Mrs. Whitener had many loves: her family, growing up on the farm, her Morgan horse Babe, her cats Sammy and Callie, and traveling. She met and married the love of her life, Oren B. Whitener II, in 1962. They celebrated 48 years of marriage before his passing in 2011. Mrs. Whitener was preceded in death by her brothers, Eric Nelson (Shirley), Ed Nelson (Ronnie), and Teddy Nelson (age 3); sisters, Bertha Larsson (Albert) and Martha King (Ben); nephew, Doug Nelson (Susie) and niece, Caren Nelson Griggs. Mrs. Whitener is survived by her daughter, Leslie Ann Crockett of Ossian, Indiana; granddaughter, Briana Marie Crockett (Chase Brown); son, Oren Bickett Whitener III of Breckenridge Hills, Missouri; granddaughter, Nicole Elizabeth Whitener; great-granddaughters, Kaia, Jade and Eva; and grandson, Justin Bickett Whitener. She is also survived by nieces, Kathy Nelson James, Barbara Nelson Reed, Gloria Nelson London, Lori Nelson Godfrey, LaLonie Nelson Tipton; nephews Eric Nelson, Gary Larsson, and Dennis Larsson. Her family will receive friends from 12pm until service time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cookeville/Putnam Co. Animal Shelter, 2650 Gainesboro Grade, Cookeville, TN 38501

Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Ronald Keith Ledbetter, age 66, of Bloomington Springs and formerly of Livingston, will be conducted 5 p.m., Saturday, August 19, 2023, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home. Ron passed from this life on Sunday, morning, July 30, 2023, from the Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was born in Livingston, on December 5, 1956, to the late Earl Anderson and Betty Reagan Ledbetter. Ron was a 1976 graduate of Livingston Academy graduating earlier than his classmates. He was a member of the Life Church of Cookeville. Ron enjoyed boating on Dale Hollow Lake, also fishing and camping with his grandchildren. Ron leaves behind his son, Matthew Ledbetter and wife Lauryn of Cookeville; grandchildren, Grace Mesler and husband Trevor, Noah Ledbetter, Makenna Ledbetter, Max Ledbetter, Connor Williams, Asher Johnson, Atticus Womack and Rowan Womack; sister, Penny Milton and husband Steve of Cookeville; stepchild, Aurelia Womack of Cookeville; friends that became family, Michael and Amber Lawhorn, Tommy and Barbara Bandie, Diane Mullinax, and Victoria Carmack. Ron was preceded in death by his parents. The family will welcome friends on Saturday, August 19, 2023 from 3 pm until time of services.
