WCTE Will Feature Educational Programming For Kids’ Summer Learning

WCTE will take part in a state-wide program to help families participate in summer learning activities.

“Camp TV” started last year to help kids have a summer camp experience in the midst of COVID. WCTE Education and Engagement Coordinator Misty Stewart said the program provides educational activities to kids across the country.

“WCTE was actually one of several stations who got a grant this year to produce episodes for the second season of Camp TV because it was such a big hit last year,” Stewart said. “So we have actually produced three local segments that are going to air. One of them is actually going to be aired nationally across the country.”

WCTE’s local programs will include a design-your-own t-shirt day and an activity in making your own clay pinch pot animal in partnership with the Appalachian Center for Craft. Stewart said they also have an episode partnering with Cumberland Mountain State Park about their birds of prey.

Stewart said Camp TV airs Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. starting Monday, June 28th and going until the end of summer. She said that as a parent herself, she wants to do everything she can to help set her child up for success in education. According to Stewart, most of the fun activities provided by PBS use materials you can already find in your home.

“You don’t have to go out and buy special things to do these activities,” Stewart said. “You can just pick up stuff that you already have in your house, you can start recycling cardboard boxes to do a ramps activity. It’s things that you already have, so it’s really accessible for anyone. You can do it at home, with your kids, to help them have fun and stay engaged.”

Stewart said that in addition to keeping your child occupied in a fun and educational way, the activities and programs are all completely free.
