WCTE is opening its station doors for Becky Magura’s community sendoff on Friday.
Station Manager Avery Hutchins said this is a chance to share memories and well wishes with Magura before she joins Nashville Public Television. Hutchins said this would not be possible without community support over Magura’s 39 years at the station.
“She has been in people’s homes on the television for many, many years,” Hutchins said. “They’re accustomed to seeing her on WCTE. Her one-on-one, some of her news reporting, her stories, just the many, many years of being there. She’s grown up on WCTE.”
Hutchins said the appreciation event is open from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. She said they wanted to have a three hour window to avoid crowding for health safety.
Hutchins said that Magura asked if people want to give a monetary donation in her name, the station is holding its education endowment fundraiser on Saturday.
“WCTE will be 43 years on-air on August 21, which is that Saturday,” Hutchins said. “We have done this the last couple of years where we are raising money for the WCTE Education Endowment Fund and that’s a fund that supports education in the Upper Cumberland. On that birthday in celebration we do an all day fundraiser where we ask people to contribute whatever they want to, to help us keep that endowment going.”
WCTE is located at 229 East Broad Street.
Hutchins said the station is going to try and have outdoor space open on Friday to avoid crowds during the farewell event. She said that masks are not required, but are recommended to protect everyone’s health.
