The White County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) encourages residents to report cases of illegal dumping or littering.
Sheriff Steve Page said trash along roadways has become an increasing problem across the county.
“It’s beginning to be a huge issue here in White County,” Page said. “We’re seeing it more and more. We’re trying to address the issue before it gets any bigger than what it already is.”
The WCSO released a statement on Facebook Monday addressing the recent increase in litter across the county.
Page said the litter goes beyond small pieces of trash laying along the roadway.
“We’re seeing a lot of bags of garbage that have blown out of peoples’ vehicles. It’s where they’re not securing their garbage before they take off to the dump, I assume,” Page said. “A lot of beer bottles, pop bottles, everything just all over the place. In a lot of our rural back roads, people are just taking their garbage and dumping it out instead of taking it to the convenience centers.”
Page said residents should stay vigilant and report any intentional littering or illegal dumping to authorities.
“If they see anyone dumping garbage anywhere to get a tag number, call it in to our local dispatch, and let us know what’s going on to try and figure out who’s doing it,” Page said. “We will do our part to address the issue as much as possible.”
The WCSO said in a statement that littering and illegal dumping can have a negative affect on the environment and the health of the community.
