Warren County Schools working towards increasing safety and awareness district-wide when it comes to potential medical emergencies.
Director of Schools Grant Swallows said after the events in the NFL with Damar Hamlin, the school system was inspired to do more to enhance the tools available to deal with emergencies.
“We have an athletic trainer for the district but that athletic trainer cannot be everywhere at all times so coaches need to be aware of what’s going on, building personnel needs to be aware of what’s going on,” Swallows said. “So ultimately this revolves around being able to purchase more equipment and being more prepared in how to use it.”
Swallows said the school system is using grant funding to purchase more AED equipment. He said once they receive the AEDs and place them in their specified locations, the important step will be to train the staff on how to use the equipment efficiently and effectively.
Swallows said the investment will also benefit kids in their learning opportunities. He said the health sciences department is one of the largest programs at Warren County High School.
“Helping our students understand the necessity of it, helping our teachers understand the necessity of it,” Swallows said. “Of course we don’t ever want to have to use but of course accidents do happen. I’ve said this before, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen our country so enthralled by a situation like it was with the Bills and the Bengals and the potential tragedy, so I think it opened some peoples’ eyes to see that real-world application of what they do in the classroom.”
