Warren County High School’s football team enters this year looking to get back to basics after a down year, but the team holds an ace in the hole on their offensive line.
After a 34-27 victory over DeKalb County in week one, the Pioneers dropped nine straight games to end the season 1-9. While there were not a lot of bright spots to be found, head coach Matt Turner said that junior lineman, Xander McCormick made a name for himself and entering his senior season will have a larger role.
“He’s got natural size and ability, you know,” Turner said. “But then, he’s also one of those quiet teddy bears, but then he’s a monster when he’s strapped up. Looking for him to really anchor and lead those lineman.”
The three star recruit stands at 6’4″ and weighs in at 300 pounds and will continue to play both sides of the ball in his senior campaign. McCormick has offers from Wake Forrest, MTSU, Appalachian State, Charlotte, and others. Turner said due to this season’s smaller class of seniors, McCormick’s leadership will be paramount this season.
“We got a small group of seniors this year, especially for a 6A program,” Turner said. “Starting with the senior class, we’ve got a highly sought after offensive lineman and defensive lineman in Xander McCormick. He’s getting a lot of offers and stuff.”
Along with McCormick, the line will feature junior lineman X’avier Simmons and Jr Mares. Simmons and Mares are both on the wrestling program and have a close bond with their head coach due to Turner also serving as the head wrestling coach.
“They’re actually my 215 pounder and heavyweight wrestlers,” Turner said. “So, they’re just two gritty guys that play with a high high intensity.”
The Pioneers open with Dekalb County Friday.
