A Vol State-sponsored phlebotomy class is a go in Celina.
Vice President for Economic Development and Regional Centers Nick Bishop said this opens the door for Vol State to continue working with Celina.
“We really appreciate our friends and partners there with the city of Celina,” Bishop said. “They’re trying to do the best they can to create access to education and workforce development for their citizens, and so it’s just a great partnership. It’s something we hope we can expand upon as we continue to move into the future.”
The deadline to sign up for the class is on Thursday. Vol State Health Science Director Kathryn Miller said there were only three spots left in the class.
“The turnout has been great, and it is filling up,” Miller said. “I anticipate we should have about ten students in this cohort. Pretty exciting for that area to have that much interest. I’m really excited to bring it to the Upper Cumberland area.”
Celina Mayor Luke Collins announced last month an EMT class to be hosted at the old Cumberland River facility had fallen through. Collins said Vol State was still open to offering a phlebotomy course instead. This course will be hosted at the old K-8 facility.
Tuition for the course is free, but there is a $200 testing free.
“If you are a Celina-Clay County resident your tuition will be covered from the contribution made from the city of Celina, and we also have what’s called the Upper Cumberland Fund,” Bishop said. “If you are a participant in this cohort and you are outside of the Celina area we will utilize scholarship dollars from the Upper Cumberland Fund to cover the tuition.”
Miller said they are aligning the classes they offer with the needs of the hospitals and medical facilities in the Upper Cumberland.
“The students are typically being mentored in a clinical facility as part of their educations, and they’re job demand is such that they’re getting hired right out of class,” Miller said.
Classes will be held on Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm to 9pm. It is a 10-week course with an additional two weeks of clinical rotation.
