Vol State Offering Free First Aid Class

Vol State wants to give back to the community through a free first-aid training class Thursday.

The program will cover basic first aid treatment practices, the stop the bleed tactic, and venomous animal bite treatments. Vol State Police Sergeant Justin Medlin said there is more to first aid than just putting a band-aid on.

“You never do know what’s going to happen in this day and time,” Medlin said. “You know, learning how to recognize a heart attack, you know, a stroke victim. It’s just good tools that you can use to possibly help somebody out and save their life.”

Medlin said the school offers this class along with other various programs to give back to the community. Participants are not required to but are encouraged to bring canned foods for the Vol State The Feed program.

“We’re just trying to give back to the community, the community has been so good to us,” Medlin said. “We’re just trying to give some free training away and encourage everybody in the community to come and receive this free training.”

Medlin said he and Upper Cumberland EMS Coordinator Jeremiah Partin got together to put this class together.

“We kind of bounced around some ideas of how we could work together and come up with a product to give to the community to help them in case situations happen,” Medlin said. “He was all eager about it, I’m eager about it, and so anytime we can give back to the community it’s always a plus.”

The class will be from 9am-12N Thursday at Vol State’s Room 224.
