Tennessee Tech’s veterans programs will get a boost this year.
The Military and Veteran Affairs Office will open a student center specifically for veterans and their dependents this fall. The Tennessee Tech Eagles Wings Student Center is expected to be open before the fall semester begins.
A Veterans Reconnect grant from the state will also pay for a new position to help veterans. That person will help match a veteran’s service record to class credit.
Ret. Army Sgt. 1st class Kevin Flanary is director of Tech’s military and veteran affairs office.
“We’ve been trying to find a way to evaluate that better and get more credit where it’s due, not give them something that’s not going to count or be an elective that counts towards anything, we’re trying to actually find out what would apply towards their degree programs,” Flanary said.
The Tennessee Higher Education Commission awarded Tech $71,355 of Veteran Reconnect funds which is part of Gov. Bill Haslam’s Drive to 55.
