Van Buren Committee A voted to pursue a TDEC grant to replace solid waste convenience center equipment.
Chair Cale Crain said the county must provide a 10 percent match for any grant dollars received. Crain said current equipment is beyond repair.
“We are looking at some new containers for Solid Waste,” Crain said. “We’ve had these containers for several years. They’re beat up. They’re leaking. We’ve repaired them as much as possible. Lot of our trash compactors are 25-30 years old. So everything’s needing to be renewed. And the state’s offering a ninety percent grant.”
Solid Waste Planner Lisa Luck provided a list of equipment estimates for containers, compactors, and receivers. Additionally, Luck said TDEC would reimburse the county for fencing or other expenses for a convenience center.
Committee A approved a cap of $200,000 for the equipment. The proposed $200,000 grant request will be brought for full commission approval on July 7.
“A couple of times a year the state offers grants for solid waste to upgrade and maybe purchase newer things,” Crain said. “So that’s our goal. We don’t know if we’ll get it but we’ll apply for it and go down that route.”
