Van Buren 4-H Chili Cook Off Needs Entries

Van Buren County’s 4-H program need more chili entries for its 4th annual Chili Cook-off in October.

Van Buren County 4-H Youth Development Agent Shelby Boyer said the chili cook-off raises money for kids to attend camps and conferences through the 4-H program. Boyer said Van Buren County is a poor county and they want to help families cover the cost of the program as much as they can.

“The rise of the kids that we have that want to participate and go to these events and camps is higher now than it was when this event first started,” Boyer said. “The more that we can send the better because it looks fantastic for us and just at the end we just want to make sure that we can send every single one of them.”

Boyer said as of right now the cook-off needs more entries as only a few entries have been submitted so far. Boyer said call your parents, call your grandparents, call your friends, call your neighbors, call anybody who can make chili and help out.

“Last year we had 25 entries which was the most that we have ever had,” Boyer said. “So I would like to see us at least reach that goal. Right now I’m about halfway there maybe, so I would like to see more come in because like I said the more chili that we have come in is just another way to have more money for our kids.”

Boyer said the program chooses to do a chili cook-off as it seems to be a popular food around this time of year.

“People love to make chili and there are all different kinds of chili,” Boyer said. “Everybody feels like they have the best recipe for chili and certain opinions about it and I thought why not let’s just battle it out.”

The cook-off will also contain an auction of various items that were donated by local businesses to raise additional funds for the program. The event will begin at 5pm on Saturday, October 5th at the Van Buren Ag Learning Center.
