Upperman High School will light up on Thursday night at 8:20 p.m. in honor of the 2020 senior class.
Assistant Principal Greg Wilson said 2020 Lights of Hope event honors the sacrifice students have made during the pandemic.
“The athletic fields here at Upperman, at both of our campuses, the old campus and the new campus, will, the lights will be on for twenty minutes and twenty seconds in honor of the commitment and dedication of our seniors,” Wilson said. “Also the lighting of the fields will be in recognition of our senior spring athletes who have not had the ability to represent UHS this spring.”
Wilson said the event is a way to show care to students and student athletes.
“I think it gives them a sense we haven’t forgotten about them,” Wilson said. “Every day I’m at a ballgame when seasons are in, whether it’s softball or baseball or something. Spring is busy. We just want them to know we’re proud of them. They’ve worked their whole career to be seniors on an athletic team, and with the pandemic it’s sort of been taken away from them.”
Wilson said considering what they’ve been through, the students are holding up well.
“Our staff and coaching staffs are in contact with students daily,” Wilson said. “We’re just trying to encourage them.”
The community is invited to join in the Lights of Hope by turning on their outside lights during the event.
