Upper Cumberland Schools Dip in TDOE Accountability Report

Multiple Upper Cumberland school districts either received similar or lowered ratings from the Tennessee Department of Education’s 2018 District Accountability report.

Cumberland, Jackson, Warren, and White County school districts all received ‘advancing’ ratings for the 2017-2018 academic year. All four districts received the same rating last year.

Fentress, Pickett, and Van Buren County school districts also received ‘advancing’ ratings, down from the highest rating of ‘exemplary’ the year prior.

Overton and Smith County schools also saw dips in their ratings. Overton County dropped from ‘achieving’ to ‘satisfactory’, while Smith County dropped from ‘exemplary’ to ‘satisfactory’.

Despite the decreases in ratings, DeKalb County Schools were the one Upper Cumberland district to receive a higher rating from the state than last year. DeKalb County now sits at ‘advancing’ after being listed as ‘needing improvement’ by the state one year ago.

The report takes into consideration a district’s TNReady and ACT test scores and participation as well as the achievements of various student subgroups. The subgroups include English learners, economically disadvantaged, and students with disabilities, among others.
