Upper Cumberland Habitat Breaks Ground on 91st Home

Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity broke ground on its 91st home Wednesday.

The groundbreaking took place in the West End Habitat Neighborhood west of downtown Cookeville. Upper Cumberland Habitat Board of Directors Member Kim Taylor was at the groundbreaking.

“In our area we have people who are  so close to becoming a homeowner, and we give them a hand up,” Taylor said. “We’re not a hand out here at Habitat. They work hard and put in their sweat equity and our mission here is to reach out to the community to help those in need.”

Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity serves the Putnam and Overton County area. It is a non-profit organization that builds homes using volunteer labor for those in need.

“With our home owners they have been planning and getting ready for this day for several months,” Taylor said. “Today we are doing a groundbreaking to recognize Miss Tasha.”

Tasha is the new homeowner. She said she was thankful for the help Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity was providing.

“It feels so great,” the new homeowner said. “I am so excited to get started on my house.”
