The Upper Cumberland Development District and an outside firm are looking to revitalize empty storefronts in the region.
Executive Director Mark Farley addressed the possibility with city and county officials Wednesday. He said Regency Properties is a retail strategist is interested in buying property in the region to revamp into new retail locations.
“If you’ve got a shopping center that you think needs to be renovated and improved and updated,” they are looking for properties to purchase to try and renovate,” Farley said. “So if you’ve got a shopping center that you think may be sale or would be for sale that needs to have some renovation done with it, see me. We’ll get you in contact and we’ll start working that project if we can.”
After the meeting, Farley said the proposal could help bring a lot more businesses to the region, especially to areas that need it the most.
“The new tenants would probably bring with them some new businesses to locate, maybe an anchor business in each one of those shopping centers,” Farley said. “Hopefully it would spur some growth [and] bring some new retail opportunities into the region that would bring some jobs with them as well.”
Farley said the firm specializes in helping locate and attract businesses to smaller communities with populations ranging from 5,000 to 25,000 people. Regency Properties is based out of Evansville, Indiana.
