UC Habitat For Humanity Repairing Homes Of Seniors This Spring

Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity is accepting applications from senior homeowners for its spring home repair projects.

The goal is to bring Putnam and Overton County homes to standards so seniors can age in place. Neighbor 2 Neighbor Project Manager Hope Craig said homeowners must be 60 years or older.

“It really benefits everybody who is related to that individual,” Craig said. “So their family, their neighborhood, it helps them get out more. Anybody that is connected to the senior that qualifies can benefit from this.”

Craig said the repair program covers anything from roofing to HVAC systems. Craig said Habitat conducts improvements yearly through grants or other funding mechanisms. Craig said spots are limited this year.

“We do walk-in showers to help with mobility, as well as grab bars in the bathroom,” Craig said. “We’ve built wheelchair ramps and stuff like that just helping with mobility or weatherization on their home.”

Craig said the application process is easy. Craig said Habitat will ask general questions over what you need done at your home as well as your income. Craig said work will begin in the spring and last through the summer.

“We want them to be able to stay in their homes as long as possible,” Craig said. “Benefiting them, their families and the community around them.”

Applications can be picked up at 728 East 15th Street in Cookeville. You can also call (931) 528-1711 Ex. 6.
