UC Extension Team Debuts New Hunting, Fishing, Outdoor Event Saturday

The Upper Cumberland Extension Team will debit a brand new event this weekend designed to bring the region’s hunters, fishermen and outdoorsmen together for connection and learning.

Woods, Water And Wildlife Day will be held at Hyder Burks Pavilion Saturday from 9am to 1pm. Ag Extension Agent Katie Martin said the extension agents wanted to host a forestry and wildlife event as a group. Martin said it has been some time since the region hosted such an event.

“Attendees can expect sessions on wildlife habitat management, wild turkey status, scoring white-tailed deer, even interesting things like filming your hunt, attracting waterfowl, timber stand improvement, feral hog control,” Martin said. “So really a little bit of everything that has to do with the great outdoors.

Martin said the free event will feature biologists from TWRA, local ag extension specialists and experts in various fields.

“We want to provide education and hands-on learning on a variety of topics that hopefully are interesting to people involved with all different sectors of the outdoor industry,” Martin said.

One example is the growing interest in filming ones hunting expedition. Martin said film expert Larry Daniels will train hunters on the best ways to capture their experiences.

“He actually has experience with this and that’s a big thing with social media and YouTube,” Daniels said. “There’s so many people out there that are interested in that kind of content. So this is hopefully going to equip people to better have the tools, equipment necessary to film their hunts if that’s something they’re interested in doing and sharing with others.”

Martin said they hope the event can become an annual event with different topics covered. Martin said they want feedback from the participants Saturday so they can improve the event.
