The Upper Cumberland Blue Star Mothers of America collecting donations to deliver 100 care packages to military servicemen.
The chapter was created last March making it the seventh in the state. President Stefanie Young said the some 30-member organization is made of mothers and other family members that provide supplies to their related soldiers.
“Sometimes these soldiers are in very remote areas, and they don’t have access to go to a post exchange and get what they need,” Young said. “So, sending out care packages to these soldiers that are deployed are a big emphasis that we do.”
Young said the organization usually focuses on Christmas but has expanded its efforts to the spring. Young said last year, the group sent 40 packages to a base in Japan. Young said one of the member’s son is a Lieutenant, so the group sent supplies to his entire unit.
“Soldiers don’t just need stuff one time a year,” Young said. “They need it year round. So we just started off spring pack and collecting items and donations. Our goal is to send out at least 100 care packages for them to have in Easter. We are going to try and do two a year.”
Young said a list of needed supplies can be found on the Upper Cumberland Blue Mothers of America Facebook page. Young said the group has several drop boxes with lists also established in Putnam County such as Cookeville Honda and Cornerstone Elementary.
