Two UC Highways Remain Closed Following Flooding

Portions of two Upper Cumberland roadways remain closed after sustaining damage during last month’s heavy rain.

Impacted roadways include Gladdice Highway (State Route 262) in Jackson County and Wilder Highway (State Route 85) in Overton County.

Tennessee Department of Transportation Spokeswoman Jennifer Flynn said those roads will be closed until repairs can be made.

“We don’t have any specific dates. We’re just doing the best we can as we’ve had several locations throughout the state that everybody is dealing with,” Flynn said. “It’s been a busy time for TDOT. We haven’t had much snow this year, but this rain has really been a challenge.”

Flynn said Highway 85 had multiple damage locations between mile marker 18.4 and 22.4. Highway 262 in Jackson County will be closed at mile marker 8.8 after a collapse occurred near Hawkins Hill Lane and Whitaker Lane.

Flynn could not provide specific dates for reopening the roads and said cost estimates are not known at this time.

“Just be aware that our people will be out there and they are doing the best they can to get these roads reopened,” Flynn said. “We certainly will strive to open them as quickly and safely as possible.”

Flynn said the entrance to Willow Grove Recreational Area reopened in Clay County Monday morning.
