Fentress and Cannon County Senior Centers will resume congregant meals starting July 1st.
UCDD Area Agency on Aging and Disability Director Holly Williams said this is likely the beginning of more sites opening with other counties exploring the option.
“We anticipate as other sites feel more comfortable doing so that they will be reopening for seniors to come and enjoy the meals at the senior center again,” Williams said.
Williams said Clay County’s Senior Center also restarted serving meals in May. Williams said the return of eating together benefits the social lives of seniors while also making it easier to complete a full meal.
“It is very important. If anything, it is more important now than it ever has been, because the social isolation that everyone has experienced over the last year or so,” Williams said. “The opportunity for everyone to come back together in the close knit communities it is more imperative than ever.”
At the same time, Williams said to go meals continue for those not comfortable eating in a group setting. Williams said county governments or senior center boards make the decision for reopening.
