Tutoring Can Help Students After COVID Shutdown

Some parents use the summer months as a time for students to work with tutors for individual work on areas of weakness.

This year’s COVID-19 school shutdown has led many education experts to suggest summer tutoring for any student to help students overcome the loss of education time.

John Keisling is Director of Educational Outreach for Crossville’s Sylvan Learning Center John Keisling. He said with classroom instruction ending so abruptly, tutoring could bridge the gap to next school year.

“We obviously know we are going to have a big time summer program this year because so many kids have missed so much,” Keisling said. “It’s going to be a situation in school this fall where teachers are going to do have to do a lot of review.”

Keisling said children usually fall behind when they get frustrated with the material and do not push through.

“We have to remember success does not come easy,” Keisling said. “Thomas Edison did 1,000 experiments before he invited the light bulb, but he did give us some good advice. Genius is one percent inspiration and about 99 percent perspiration, so it really does take hanging in there. It doesn’t come easy. It isn’t magical.”

Parents questioning if their child needs tutoring should review test scores from this school year or contact their teacher for advice.
