Work is underway at Tennessee Tech’s Tucker Stadium to install new turf.
Director of Athletics Mark Wilson said that the project has been about three years in the making, and that the new turf has updated technology compared to the last installation in 2007.
“We’ve elected to go with the new state of the art,” Wilson said. “It’s a combination of defibrillated fiber and monofilament fiber, so that is new technology that we’re taking advantage of and we think it makes it play more like natural grass than even what the previous turf did.”
Typically, turf has a warranty of about seven or eight years, but Wilson said the maintenance team prides itself in caring for the turf. Wilson said they made the commitment to maintain it, going so far as purchasing a groomer and following care instructions as closely as possible. They expect the latest installation to last about 12 to 13 years.
Wilson said the because Tech has a consistent brand it wants to uphold, so fans can expect to see the same stadium image they’re familiar with.
“Tucker Stadium has a brand with the way it looks and it’s consistent with the look of the Hooper Eblen Center, with the center court logo and center field logo the same, purple end zone, purple base lines, white lettering, eagle head logos,” Smith said. “So Tucker Stadium is going to look the same to keep consistent with our brand.”
Wilson said he thinks the new field shows Tech’s commitment to Coach Alexander and the student athletes, as well as its commitment to growth in football. He said they hope to provide the team the tools necessary to succeed for the upcoming season.
