Tennessee Tech’s Oakley STEM Center Director Sally Pardue said folks will need a special set of glasses if they want to watch the solar eclipse August 21.
The moon will completely cover the sun at about 1:30 p.m. she said.
“For all the duration of time up to where it’s a total eclipse, total coverage of the moon covering the sun, we will need to have solar glasses so you can look up towards the sun if you have these special solar eclipse viewers,” Pardue said.
The STEM Center is fundraising about $16,000 to provide every child in the Upper Cumberland with solar eclipse glasses. Pardue said the center has raised about half the money so far.
Children aren’t the only ones who need the viewing lenses, Pardue said.
“Make sure that you as an adult viewer are also safe, we would encourage families to reach out to some of the other community groups who may be selling these glasses as fundraisers,” Pardue said.
