Call it a late arriving crowd. Tennessee Tech’s Residential Life received more than 200 housing applications in both June and July.
Residential Life Director Josh Edmonds said that is between five and ten times the norm.
“I didn’t know what to expect in May, we were down a little bit,” Edmonds said. “We were actually down a couple hundred applications in May. Something happened in June and July and maybe people started feeling more comfortable. I think a lot of students wanted to stay close to home in the Upper Cumberland.”
Edmonds said over 2,100 students are living in the dorms and Tech Village this fall. He said while this is an average number, applications across the board were higher this year than any other year he’s seen.
“We’ve had a lot of returning students coming to campus as well, and that might be from when they were released in March and now they’re trying to find housing,” Edmonds said. “We really don’t know what the dynamic is there, but it’s very interesting.”
The number of students living in the dorm this year could still shift. Edmonds said over 60 students don’t show up every semester. So far 2,193 applications have been submitted for the fall. In a normal year, the heavier months are between March and May.
