TTU Professor Releases Book About 1867 Train Robbery, Murder

A Tennessee Tech journalism professor may have revealed a new finding in a 1867 train robbery that lead to murder.

Dr. Russ Witcher’s new book “Going Home to Die No More,” tells the story of Union Captain William King. King was was hanged as an accomplice to the murder of his brother but proclaimed his innocence.

While reviewing the court documents, Witcher said he found evidence that questions the case.

“The time line makes it virtually impossible for either William King or Abraham Owens the two men who were hung to have been near Harvey King at the time of the shooting,” Witcher said. “Certainly they were involved in the train robbery, but I don’t think either man was guilty of the murder.”

Witcher said the book details the accounts of the train robbery and the actions that eventually lead to the death of King. The book is available now on Amazon.

Witcher said the book got its start when one of his nephews decided to clean and restore the tombstone of Witcher’s great-grandfather, who was a Union soldier in the Civil War. The tombstone mentioned the exact military company his great-grandfather was in, and out of curiosity Witcher looked up more information about it.
