TTU Exec. Committee Approves President Review, Trustees Give Oldham Compensation

Tennessee Tech will fund an outside consultant to conduct a comprehensive review of President Phil Oldham.

The university’s Executive Committee approved $25,000 Thursday for Chair Trudy Harper and Vice-Chair Teresa Vanhooser to select a company. Harper said the review will play a role in new contract discussions for Oldham.

“It is really to inform our judgement about the president and what he needs going forward,” Harper said. “It’s not just a ‘Is he doing a good job’, but it’s what he can use from us, as well, which I think is very helpful and would inform a contract I believe.”

Harper said three companies submitted proposals to do the job. Harper said her recommendation would to move forward with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

Harper said she would like to have a consultant selected as soon as possible. Harper said the comprehensive review is a best practice recommended by the Association of Governing Boards.

Later during in the day, the Tennessee Tech Board of Trustees voted to give President Phil Oldham a six percent raise and 10 percent one-time bonus.

The compensation came through two separate motions after about an hour of discussion. Bonuses ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 were mentioned before a decision was made.

Board Chair Trudy Harper said the compensation would be in effect in July. The raise passed 7-1 with Trustee Johnny Stites voting no. The bonus 6-2 with Trustees Dan Allcott and Rhedona Rose against.
