TTU Adds New Hall North Roof Replacement To Project List

A roof replacement of New Hall North has been placed on Tennessee Tech’s disclosed project list.

Capital Projects and Planning Director Jim Cobb said this is a preliminary planning action for an aging roof. It means the university has a two-year period to activate the project.

“We go through the approval, get a designer appointed and do the design on the plans of the roof replacement and actually get started,” Cobb said. “Probably six to 12 months would have passed, so we’re looking at 14 years.”

Cobb said the standard life-span of the shingles is about 15 years. Cobb said the building has faced some leak issues recently.

“If you get 15 years out of a standard three-tab shingle, you’re doing pretty good,” Cobb said. “The university has a new type of shingle that we have specified for campus now for roof replacements. It’s an architectural, three-dimensional shingle, and we get a longer life out of that shingle.”

Cobb said the earliest the project would take place is the summer of next year. Cobb said the project estimate is about $750,000.

“What drives it is our facility and maintenance folks,” Cobb said.”Just looking at the roof for leaks or problems. When they say it is time, then we identify the funding, and we move forward.”

Cobb said the building was first occupied in 2009. The project was approved to be placed on the list by the Board of Trustees in June.
