A Boil Water Advisory will remain in effect for water customers of Livingston and the North Overton Utility District until midday Wednesday.
Livingston Mayor Curtis Hayes said an electrical transformer failed in the early morning hours, causing water supplies to be depleted.
“The failure disabled necessary equipment required for proper treatment,” Hayes said. “The issue has been addressed and the water treatment plant is back up and running. System testing is underway and results will be back in the next 24 hours.”
Water samples have been sent to TDEC, the state agency which monitors water quality. Hayes said the testing is a precautionary matter from the water tanks getting low. When the happens, contaminants can enter the water supply.
“We just got to wait for those bacteria samples to come back,” Hayes said. “I’m very confident that they will come back just fine.”
Hayes said the water operators worked hard to keep up with demand when the transformer failed. Livingston’s water department serves some 5,000 households as well as several utility districts.
Tap water should be boiled vigorously for at least one full minute once the water begins to bubble. Boiled water should be used for drinking, cooking, ice making, washing dishes, brushing teeth, preparing food or drinks, and watering animals. Water from any appliance should be avoided.
