New traffic lights at the I-40 and Highway 111 interchange in Cookeville are now fully operational.
TDOT Spokeswoman Jennifer Flynn said the lights will help make the intersection safer for motorists.
“We are very very pleased to have this important project completed,” Flynn said. “It should make for a much safer commute for everyone and we just want to make sure people are aware to look out for these signals, and we hope that it will make life easier for you guys.”
The $920,000 project officially began in February. Poles were fabricated over spring and placed in the ground earlier this month.
Flynn said the intersection had a high risk for accidents without the traffic signals.
“The amount of traffic and the difficulty of turning left there, and a lot of times traffic would back up onto the ramps,” Flynn said. “We do not like that… when traffic starts backing up on the ramps. It could possibly get on the mainline of the interstate. That’s just a safety issue all the way around.”
Flynn said crews could have a few minor projects at the intersection remaining but noted the majority of the work has finished.
