Tornado victims across the highway 70 corridor are still searching for housing that will accommodate their budget and family needs.
Emergency Management volunteer Amber Jared said most of the victims have found temporary or permanent housing.
“We do have a handful of folks who are being housed in hotels and some who are being housed in either housing that was provided by a volunteer group, some of the church groups, or some other places while we are still trying to locate suitable housing that’s going to work for them,” Jared said.
Jared said some community members have offered discounted rent from their rental properties. She said the biggest challenge has been finding affordable housing.
“Trying to re-home someone who is paying $350, or $400 a month in rent, it’s really really difficult with the rental rates that we have in Putnam County,” Jared said.
Jared said the community needs an increase in market share for affordable housing, especially with the community’s demographic.
“The generosity of the community and the people who have come forward and have really tried to help if they have had property that was available to make it accessible for the survivors, it’s been very heartwarming to see the community come together,” Jared said. “Especially since it’s something that’s such a huge need.”
