Time To Prepare For Property Taxes As Feb. Deadline Approaches

The deadline to pay your property taxes is quickly approaching.

February 28th is the last day you can make payments without interest penalties. White County Trustee Kathryn Adcock said the main issue people should be aware of is if your property changed hands in the middle of the year.

“I would like to stress to the buyer to check their closing statement or settling statement to know who is responsible to pay the taxes,” Adcock said. “Typically they are prorated.”

Adcock said most of the time, the buyer will give their portion to the seller, so the party can pay the bill. Adcock said the Trustee’s office cannot take a partial payment from two different people.

Adcock said she recommends those that own multiple parcels to bring each property tax notice to the office. Adcock said notices should have been received in October.

“It makes the process so much easier if you have all of your notices,” Adcock said. “We do not want to miss a parcel. We have over 18,000 in the county. It’s difficult to keep up, so if somebody has more than one, it is so much easier to bring those notices.”

Adcock said business owners with personal property taxes under a different name can also sometimes slip through the cracks. Adcock said there are no extensions for payments, so plan accordingly as the deadline approaches.
