Three Putnam County Schools received an A grade from the state in the first report of how each school statewide is performing.
Cookeville High School received a 4.9 out of 5 for its A. Capshaw Elementary scored a perfect 5. Algood Middle School received a 4.8 out of 5.
Upperman High School and Jere Whitson Elementary both received D grades, the lowest grades in the school system.
The State Department Of Education ranked each school on student achievement, growth in achievement, growth for highest need students, and college/career readiness among the high schools. The state released the report Thursday.
Cookeville High School received a four on growth for highest need students while the other indicators were level five. Algood Middle School reached a 4.7 on achievement. Upperman High School scored a level one on growth, with low scores on both math and literacy.
Eight Putnam County Schools scored Bs on the grades released Thursday: Monterey High School, Burks Elementary, Cane Creek Elementary, Cornerstone Elementary, Northeast Elementary, Prescott South Elementary, Prescott South Middle School, and Sycamore Elementary.
Monterey ranked as a level five on college and career readiness, with a three on achievement.
Scoring a grade C: Algood Elementary, Avery Trace Middle School, Park View Elementary, and Upperman Middle School.
Baxter Primary School and White Plains Academy were not graded.
The Legislature mandated the grades which were delayed by testing problems and then COVID. Education leaders expressed concern over the quick turnaround on the grades, after state officials moved in October and November to define the grading scale, just weeks before releasing the grade. Lawmakers wanted an “at-a-glance” way to see each school’s performance.
