Three New Sparta Police Officers Sworn Into Service

Sparta has three new police officers after being sworn in during Thursday’s Board of Alderman meeting.

Brent Copeland, Justin Cunningham and Brandon Farris are the new patrolmen. Chief Doug Goff said the three new additions fill a major city need.

“I am very excited, because we have now filled all the positions,” Goff said. “We have had several officers kind of on the edge working a very very tight schedule, especially with the COVID. We have not been able to fill those positions until now.”

Goff said finding quality officers this year has been difficult. The three will begin patrols next week.

“Everything that I could find out from my resources is they are fine individuals,” Goff said. “One of them worked for the police department previously. Brent Copeland and he is a veteran there. He has come back, and so, he has a great record with the police department. He is a good officer, and the other two are fine officers. I am looking forward to working with them.”

The promotion for Police Officer Rodney Daniel to a sergeant was also approved.

“He is a 18 year veteran for our police department,” Goff said. “He is a good office. Good attendance, and he takes pride in his work. He is over our fire arms program. He is a great fire arms instructor. We appreciate him, and I think he wanted to advance his career as a sergeant and he was selected. I think he will do an outstanding job.”

In other business, the Board of Alderman also anonymously approved the two invitations to bid for replacing electric panels and air release valves for the water treatment plant. Public Works Director Dillard Quick said separating the bids was to save money. Both are budgeted projects.
