Three Children Injured In Interstate 40 Crash, Driver Charged

Three children suffered injuries in a crash on Interstate 40 in Putnam County Friday.

The crash happened at mile marker 284 eastbound at 11:05 a.m.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, medical helicopters airlifted an 8-year-old male and 5-year-old female to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital for treatment to undisclosed injuries. A 1-year-old female received treatment at Cookeville Regional Medical Center for minor injuries.

A preliminary crash report said the driver, 30-year-old Curtis A. Ferguson of Cookeville, was charged with child restrain device and failure to exercise due care. Ferguson suffered minor injuries and received treatment at Cookeville Regional.

The crash report indicated that the 8-year-old was not restrained properly. Officials say the use of a child restraint device would have made a difference in the outcome of the crash.

The crash report did not include the make and model of the vehicle involved in the crash or a description of what happened.
