Tennessee Tech Changing Housing Process After Last Years Shortage

Tennessee Tech has made changes to its housing policies after last fall’s housing shortage.

Vice President of Enrollment Karen Lykins said the department looked at last year’s situation where some students started the semester in hotels, she said they wanted to change to be more effective and efficient in making sure incoming Freshmen have on-campus housing.

“Freshman were in first in line this time for priority,” Lykins said. “We never would suggest that our Freshmen would go into a hotel so that is something we don’t do, because of that first-time experience you need to be on campus so that we can make sure you’re acclimated well.”

Lykins said that despite enrollment and applications to Tennessee Tech being at an all-time high, there are still plenty of housing options for the upcoming year. She said the University will continue to monitor the situation throughout the summer, but there are currently not any issues.

“For fall 23′ we still have rooms available for first-time Freshmen coming into the university,” Lykins said. “We want to make sure that anybody that’s still waiting on making a decision about where they’re going to continue their education, that we do have housing available.”

Lykins said as enrollment continues to rise and the university continues to grow, there are plans to add more housing options for students.

She said the University has already been approved to begin the planning stages of a new hall on campus to accommodate future growth.

“We currently have plans to build an innovation residence hall there near sherlock park,” Lykins said. “On Sherlock Park where the new engineering building is being built.”
