Tenn. Online Voter Registration Active

Tennessee now has online voter registration.

Secretary of State Tre Hargett announced the move Wednesday morning from Nashville.

Putnam County Election Administrator Debbie Steidl said it’s already been put to use in the Upper Cumberland.

“Well I know that a lot of young people and not only young people, but they use the computer a lot and we’ve already had a few people register online. I think it’ll work well, especially for those oriented to working on the computer,” Steidl said.

Even though the method of registration is different, the same checks must still be performed, Steidl said.

“Are they a citizen? just things, have they had a felony? You know there’s some things that you have to look for after the fact, no matter what they do, the same is true for online,” Steidl said.

Online voter registration can be performed through the Secretary of State’s homepage.
