More than 700 students, faculty, and alumni voiced their opinions over the past six months on updating Tennessee Tech’s Strategic Plan.
The Board of Trustees heard Thursday from steering committee co-chairs Tom Payne, College of Business Dean, and Lisa Zagumny, College of Education Dean.
“We’ve learned from our conversations that in spite of and perhaps due to its expansive scope, the current mission statement fails to capture the uniqueness and richness that is Tennessee Tech,” Payne said.
Payne said the committee tried to produce a clear, cohesive picture of what the university should be going forward.
The updated plan focuses on four areas: education for life, innovation, exceptional stewardship, and impact through engagement.
“They speak to who we are, what we believe,” Zagumny said. “These are the foundational values that keep us firmly on course as we navigate through the challenging opportunity that is higher education.”
President Phillip Oldham said the updated mission focuses more on how to make students successful in a future life, not just graduating them.
Oldham added it’s time to put the mission work in action.
“It’s time to stop searching and start doing,” Oldham said. “Start building that Tennessee Tech of tomorrow.”
