The Tennessee Higher Education Commission voted Friday to allow Tennessee Tech and other universities to increase tuition up to two percent next school year.
The staff recommended up to a three percent increase. But several commission members expressed concern about putting that kind of strain on students during the COVID pandemic.
Commissioner Dr. Nancy Dishner said the commission has talked about allowing each individual school make the decision for itself. But she said the vote felt like micro managing.
THEC Executive Director Mike Krause pointed to Tennessee Tech as a school that faces competitive issues from other universities in deciding not to increase tuition.
The commission voted 7-4 in favor of the up to two percent increase.
