Tennessee Tech is encouraging students and alumni to wear purple and gold on Friday as part of a nationwide initiative called College Colors Day.
Tennessee Tech Public Relations Director Jonathan Frank said the school hopes to see people all across the country showing support for the university. Frank said the event is a fun way for Tech students to connect as football season kicks off.
“I think it is a well-loved tradition,” Frank said. “And we see great participation every year. Particularly now with social media, we are able to get glimpses of people celebrating all over the country.”
The event was started in 2004 by Collegiate Licenses Company which is a partner of Tennessee Tech. Frank said the school is encouraging former students to post pictures on social media of themselves in Tech gear and letting them know how they celebrated using the hashtag College Colors Day.
“It’s coming at a really significant time for our athletic teams,” Frank said. “This academic year marks one hundred years as being the golden eagles.”
Frank said the nickname was adopted by Tech’s athletic association in 1925. Frank said the excitement is high for College Colors Day.
“The theme of College Colors Day across the country this year is “Don’t Miss The Moment”,” Frank said. “We are certainly in a very exciting moment for Tennessee Tech as a university and for our sports teams.”
Frank said another goal of the initiative is to show how sports brings people together.
“We know that our athletic games and athletic traditions are some of our student’s best-loved memories when they graduate and leave here,” Frank said. “It brings our students together and our community together in myriad ways.”
