Tech Softball Collecting For Putnam County Animal Shelter

Tech softball players will do their best to hit a home run for local animals Friday and Saturday.

The players will be collecting supplies and donations for the Putnam County Animal Shelter during the weekend homestand with Lindenwood. Coach Danielle Penner said the ladies wanted to come together out of love for animals after getting a call from the shelter about the overwhelming need for supplies.

“I have players with cats and dogs and I just know what they do,” Penner said. “So it just broke my heart that the shelter was in that much need and knowing how much we love animals, when I approached my team about it, they were very very supportive of it. So was the athletic department.”

Game times Noon Friday and 1pm Saturday at the Tech Softball Complex. Some of the most needed items include Purina and Pedigree dog food and Purina puppy chow. Penner said the school will provide a box truck to load with pet supplies.

“I’m not saying it’s inexpensive, but can I give up a night at one of the local restaurants to help the shelter feed some pets? Of course,” Penner said. “And future pets? Of course. I’m excited to be able to do it. I’m really looking forward to, hopefully, a lot of food that we’re able to accumulate for the shelters.”

She said the Cookeville community’s willingness to help others comes as no surprise. She said the city has quickly begun to fell like home to her in her short time here, largely due to the spirit of teamwork and togetherness that flows through the residents and local businesses. She said people from her hometown of Miami, Florida have even reached out asking if they can donate.
